The decorative velvet lapels and stand-up collar are inspired by menswear. According to the student curators, these details bespeak the desire for college-educated women to fit into a male world during the Gilded Age.<br /><br />The exhibit gives a rare opportunity for artists to sketch antique dresses from observation. I made the drawing with violet and ochre <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Caran-DAche-Supracolor-Set-Colors/dp/B0009I52O2?ie=UTF8&tag=gurnjour-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">colored pencils </a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=gurnjour-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B0009I52O2" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; padding: 0px ! important;" width="1" />and a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Niji-Waterbrush-Medium-Round-12mm/dp/B000KNJEMW?ie=UTF8&tag=gurnjour-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">water brush.</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=gurnjour-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B000KNJEMW" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; padding: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> The dress was green, but I didn’t bring any green pencils, so I just picked two opposite colors and let them duke it out.<br /><br /><a href="http://info.vassar.edu/news/2010-2011/110510-palmer-fashioning.html"><i>Fashioning an Education:  150 Years of Vassar Students and What They Wore </i></a>is at the James W. Palmer III Gallery at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York through June 12, 2011. It's free and open to the public. Ever Dream Land

Am I just looking for nostalgic visions of the human-centered places that hardly exist anymore? Is the plastic franchise landscape worth painting? <br /><br />For me, the answer is yes to both questions. What interests me most is time—how changes in human thought play themselves out in layers of architecture. Stephen Doherty</a> of <a href="http://pleinairmagazine.com/editor/">Plein Air magazine. </a><br /><br />I’ll have four oil paintings in the show, three of which are plein air pieces. It’s at the Society of Illustrators at 128 East 63rd Street.  <br /><br />Over at the <a href="http://www.hirschlandadler.com/view_1.html?type=MO&id=3230">Hirschl & Adler </a>galleries on 730 Fifth Avenue, it’s also the last day for "Bouguereau & His Milieu," a small show of six paintings by William Adolphe Bouguereau. The sign in the store behind says “CLOSING OUT INVENTORY: EVERYTHING MUST GO.” <br /><br />The paintings steer clear of overt narrative, sentimental pity, or political diatribe. Unfortunately, some images look like professional models impersonating down-and-outers. And some rely a bit too heavily on photographs. <br /><br />The most convincing is a street scene with African-American young people painted by Garin Baker. Mr. Baker knows the neighborhood well, because he has worked for years on the street, developed a mural program with underprivileged artists in Newburgh, NY.<br /><br />Marvin Franklin (1952-2007) painted authoritative watercolors of subway riders. It stand squarely in the nineteenth-century realist tradition of Bastien-Lepage, Kramskoi (above: "Portrait of a Peasant"), and Dagnan-Bouveret, as well as the better-known Courbet, Millet, and Van Gogh. <br /><br />The images are disquieting, reminding us of the hardships faced by the bottom margin of our society. Art can make us look at things we’d normally look away from. Such subjects are not easy choices for a career-minded painter. They are often made at the expense of an automatic sale.<br /><br />Tonight there will be a lecture and panel discussion at the Salmagundi Club, including Fred Ross, Vern G. Gérôme’s Critics

Earlier museums in Rye, New York; Boca Raton, Florida; and Northampton, Massachusetts are sadly no longer in operation.<br /><br />Toonseum is very small—the size of a gallery or shopfront, but it’s fun to visit because it’s run by artists.
